The Ouroboros is a symbol which occurs in diverse cultures, such as Classical Greece and ancient Egypt. It appears in both South American mythology and in Norse mythology (Jormungandr) as a serpent that encicles the world. It forms part of Alchemical, Gnostic and Theosophical symbolism.

It can symbolise or represent a variety of ideas. Motion, continuity, immortality, eternity, wisdom, primordial unity, renewal, self-sufficiency.

Cyclic time, consuming  and renewing itself. The seasons and the cycle of the year.

As the cthonic serpent and the celestial circle it can represent the marriage of Heaven and Earth.
